I am very fortunate. I live in a house near the sea, with a wonderful wife and two fantastic kids. I can see, hear, walk, and use my hands. I work and have enough money. [Ok, more money is always nice, but so long as you can pay the bills, eat and have something left over, everything else is a bonus].
But sometimes I forget how fortunate I am and instead see all the things that are wrong, rather than all the things that are right. When I start to look life in this way, its time to head to the hills for a night or two and reflect on all the things that bring joy into my life. Except I have not been able to get away for a while now and the weather for the weekend is not looking good. So I made the decision yesterday to get up early and go for a long walk.
Everything went to plan, up, breakfast, packed and off I went before everyone else was up!
The first thing I realised is that if you have an allergy to grass, don't wear shorts while walking in long grass.
The second thing I realised was that the wind was coming from behind the hills and as I climbed higher, the wind got stronger. When I got near to the top I found a slightly sheltered spot, drank some lemon tea and watched the cloud formations develop as the sun rose higher. It was good to just sit and be at peace with the world. But out of the sheltered spot, the wind seemed to be getting stronger and in some places nearly blew me over!
A slight adjustment to the plan. Instead of heading further into the hills, to cook some noodles over my lightweight stove... that probably would blow away, I headed back, slowly, enjoying the start of a new day and ready to get on with life with a new sense of calm and happiness!
Simple things, mean the most :)
